This ‘how to’ specifically covers our QuickTag Mk3 tagging gun, which uses a MK2 needle but could also be applicable as a rough guide for other brands and gauges.
Choosing the correct attachment
First things first, it is important to note that standard gauge guns can only be used with standard gauge attachments, and the same is true for fine gauge guns.
Read our blog ‘How to choose your tagging gun and attachments’ for more guidance on what to consider when making your selection.
Inserting the attachments and using the tagging gun

Thread the ‘T’ end of the attachment strip into the T shaped slot at the top of the gun.

To start using the gun, first remove the safety cover over the needle, then hold the needle tip gently against the item you wish to tag and pull the trigger, this will cause the attachment to fire through the needle.

Once all the attachments are gone, the empty strip will drop out of the bottom of the gun.

If you need to remove a half-used strip, pull back the latch on the top of the gun to release the strip and lift it out.
Troubleshooting potential problems:
Will I need to replace the needle?
MK2 tagging gun needles have an integral blade that may become blunt over time and requires replacing
What do I do if the guns jams?
If the gun becomes jammed, do not force it to fire, as the pin that goes through the needle to push the attachments through is delicate and if it gets bent, it cannot be repaired. To fix the a jammed tagging gun, remove the tags and the needle, and then reset.
Changing the needle:
- To release the needle, turn the needle stay clockwise so it points towards the needle tip. Being aware of the sharp end, slide the old needle out.
- To insert the new needle, simple slide it in, ensuring the notch is at the top and the groove is facing you.
- Lock it into position by turning the needle stay anticlockwise as far as it will go.
- Check the needle is secure by holding the shaft of the needle and gently tugging.
- If the needle stay doesn't go back easily, check your alignment and try again.
